Of course, Dragonest has already earned a bit of disdain by decided to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, something that has continued to be an issue with PC Gamers since Epic launched the digital storefront. This news comes just a few days after Chinese game publisher Dragonest revealed Auto Chess, a copy of Dota 2 Auto Chess without any of the game’s iconic characters. Soon hits today, as Valve has officially unveiled Dota Underlords, a special standalone version of Dota 2 Auto Chess. Dota auto chess mod#
With the mod gaining so much popularity, it was only a matter of time until it became its own thing. Valve are not primarily mobile developers, and China’s games market is decidedly more mobile-focused over the PC platform that benefits Drodo.Earlier this year, Dota Auto Chess released on Steam, quickly becoming a hit among Dota players. Though it is difficult to get a beat on why both sides couldn’t come to an agreement, there is a myriad of possibilities. It’s interesting to note that Valve tried to bring the Drodo team in and work together in creating the future of Dota Auto Chess, but as the blog notes, “We both came to the conclusion that Valve and Drodo could not work directly with each other for a variety of reasons.” Both Valve and Drodo seem to be amicable in their directions, with Drodo commenting positively on Valve’s support. Even Valve links players to Drodo’s website where mobile players can sign up for the beta.
As discussed in a recent blog post, Valve will be developing their own version of the game while Drodo focuses on creating a mobile, non- Dota version of Auto Chess on their own. Dota was once a custom WarCraft 3 multiplayer map that birthed the early seeds that planted the MOBA tree, and it seemed as though Valve hoped to approach their Dota 2 mod with a similar approach.Ĭompetition is good for the players at home, and it looks like we’ll see true competition for the future of Dota Auto Chess.

Great games have come from mods and custom maps in the past, and Valve is no stranger to them. Referred to as “Auto Chess” for short, it is a custom map where players buy “pieces” on a multi-board layout and play them strategically as opposed to making more APM-heavy twitch inputs like the MOBA. If you have ever stumbled upon Twitch over the past few months, it’s hard not to see some of the most popular streamers playing a modded version of Dota 2 called Dota Auto Chess.
While mod creators at Drodo will continue to pivot to mobile, Valve announces they will be creating a Dota Auto Chess version of their own separately.
